Leading for Literacy Improvement

Ohio's literacy leaders are uniquely positioned to leverage the science of reading for the benefit of all students. State policies, legislation, and initiatives are elevating the importance of aligning instruction and assessment to the reading research.

Dr. Stollar's presentation will define Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) as the framework for implementing the science of reading and will highlight the aspects of the model that school leaders can leverage for meaningful change.

Developing Sustainable Systems: Structured Literacy through an MTSS Framework

Rebecca_Tompkins_Columbus Symposium During this presentation, Becky Tompkins, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Sycamore Community School District, Cincinnati, will share the district's journey in empowering teachers and administrators with a strong foundation of the science of reading across all tiers of instruction. Through professional learning, evidence-based and high-quality instructional materials, and data-guided instruction, the district will share how it is implementing practices to impact outcomes positively for all students through the power of literacy.

Elia Headshot During this session, Michelle Elia, Ohio Reading League President and Assistant Professor at Marietta College will discuss Ohio's professional learning mandate. She will also present the role of professional learning as part of a systems-wide literacy plan to build teacher capacity and assist with implementing high-quality instructional materials.
