Now more than ever, we are called to focus on compelling evidence-aligned reading research to provide a clear foundation for student success. At our Boise event, we'll hear from nationally recognized literacy experts and school leaders who have brought transformative change to their district’s reading instruction.
Literacy is one of the most significant social justice and equity issues today. Through the science of reading research, we can deliver on the promise of literacy for all.
School leaders are the key agents of change in making good on that promise.
Your leadership matters. Districts where leaders know the research and lead the instruction experience the greatest success.
Lunch will be provided.

Idaho's Progress Toward Science-Based Literacy Instruction: Where Do We Go Next?
Louisa Moats, EdD, Literacy Leader, Co-Author of LETRS® and Spellography
Several initiatives have been moving Idaho toward implementation of reading science, including the SMART project, the dyslexia legislation, the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Plan, and the Path Forward initiative.
In this session, we’ll review what “the science of reading” does and does not mean and look closely at the remaining gaps in both, understanding common classroom practice that must be addressed, before all learners have an equal chance at becoming proficient readers and writers. Participants will be asked to engage in some Structured Language activities that illustrate the difference between more and less effective teaching.

Big Literacy Questions, Bold Leader Moves
Laura Stewart, Chief Academic Officer, 95 Percent Group
As an educational leader are you seeking literacy change in your building or district? Transformational change involves a fundamental shift in how things are done, which means asking ourselves and our school communities bold questions about literacy and our leadership toward that goal. This requires leaders to know the “leader moves,” guiding collaborative problem-solving through those questions. In this session, leaders will be engaged in discussions around the big literacy questions that need to be asked and will hear stories of the courageous leader moves that have the power to enact transformational change in literacy instruction to ultimately impact student achievement.
In working with leaders around the country, Laura has found these BIG questions and BOLD leader moves to be critical openings to any transformational change work.

A Framework for Improving the Outcomes in a Science-Driven Culture
Deb Glaser, EdD, Educational Consultant, Author, and Professional Development Provider
As with any profession, education requires constant professional learning to help teachers stay on top of research driven instructional practice. Available to teachers are multiple options for professional development (PD) that can target areas of perceived teacher and student need, but how do we choose PD that will meet those needs?
Dr. Glaser will provide a framework for planning professional learning from the reading teachers’ perspectives and within the broader needs of schools and districts. Comprehensive PD that is designed to lay the foundation of knowledge about what to teach and how to teach with a strong connection to pedagogy is a critical first step. Collaborative models further deepen learning and application. Instructional program decisions, training to implement programs, and support through systems and structures further increase the development of the professional reading teacher. Most importantly, students benefit and grow, which is our ultimate goal when a well-designed PD plan is in place and carried out.
