95 Adolescent Word Study Solution

Opening the door to academic langue and cross-curricular success.
AWSS-Built-for-secondary-classrooms

95 Adolescent Word Study Solution empowers teachers with evidence-aligned tools to help students decode multisyllable words and become proficient in academic vocabulary. Quick and flexible to implement, it includes professional learning that builds teacher confidence — teachers gain skills as students gain success.

Only 30% of 8th graders and 35% of 12th graders read proficiently (NAEP 2024). Although often perceived as comprehension issues, research shows the barrier is frequently rooted in gaps in recognizing and understanding multisyllable, academic vocabulary—which becomes increasingly complex as students advance through school.

With the right tools and training, teachers can help all secondary students build these essential skills and start accessing grade-level content.

95 Adolescent Word Study Solution Workshop Overview

The 6-hour comprehensive session covers both Multisyllable Routine Cards and Morpheme Magic in a single day. This format works especially well for schools that are implementing the full AWSS solution and want their team trained on both components together.

The extended time allows for deeper practice, more word examples, and—this is the part that really matters—time for participants to plan how they’ll actually schedule and deliver instruction in their own buildings. The afternoon shifts from “here’s how the program works” to “how are you going to make this work in your context?”

Participants leave with hands-on experience in every major routine, a clear understanding of the three-week instructional cycle, and a draft implementation plan they can refine with their teams.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why explicit syllable type instruction matters for adolescent readers, including the connection between decoding fluency and comprehension.
  • Identify and describe the six syllable types (closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, vowel team, consonant-le, and r-controlled) with corresponding gestures.
  • Demonstrate the five-step Multisyllable Word Division Routine with sample words.
  • Apply the gradual release of responsibility model (I Do, We Do, You Do) within lesson routines.
  • Identify adaptation strategies for whole-group and intervention settings.
  • Explain how morphological awareness supports both decoding and vocabulary development in adolescent readers.
  • Navigate the program materials, including scope and sequence, lesson cards, and student practice pages.
  • Plan for integration of Morpheme Magic alongside Multisyllable Routine Cards within a cohesive word study block.
