READ FIRST
Please read these instructions prior to beginning the lesson and direct any questions to your teacher.
This lesson uses distinct shapes to combine the first sound (onset) of a word to the final part (rime) of the word. When blended together the two parts form a word. Shapes are used to represent the word parts.

Parent Instructions:
Now that your child has worked with syllables, today’s lesson will help your child work with a smaller part of a one syllable word called the onset and rime. They will learn to hear how two parts of a word are blended together to say the word. Please notice that any time you see a letter closed in by these marks / / you will be saying the sound the letter makes not the name of the letter.
Before you start the videos you will want to print these instructions, the onset and rime mat, and one green arrow shape. If you aren’t able to print you might want to take a picture of these instructions on your phone. You can create the materials by using a piece of paper and drawing the shape you see on the mat. Make the green arrow shape by using ½ of an index card. The green shape needs to fit into the red shape on the mat. Please see the picture below.
Watch video 1 with your child. In this video the teacher will model how to add the first sound of a word to the rest of the word to blend the word together. Your child does not need any materials for this part of the lesson.
Watch video 2 with your child. The video will show your child how to add the first sound of a word to the rest of the word to blend the word together. There will be several opportunities for your child to practice.
