About the Washington State Branch of the Science of Reading - What I Should Have Learned in College Facebook Group

Our mission is to create a safe space where Education professionals (i.e. Teachers, Tutors, SLPs, OTs, Psychologists, Admins, Professors) in the state of Washington can grow together in the science of reading (SOR) and work collectively to build our knowledge base and transfer this understanding into effective literacy practices. We will build a community interested in learning the science of reading, explore professional development options, and discuss how to implement the science of reading to transform our work with children. We will keep abreast of legislation around dyslexia screening and intervention, teacher preparation at all levels, and other education issues related to the science of reading.

This group explores, through discussion, what the science tells us about how children learn to read, write and spell and how to connect scientific reading research to instructional practice. The overwhelming majority of Educators did not learn about the SOR in college or graduate school and have not learned about it in professional development provided in their places of work. We are excited you chose to join us on this journey. We welcome your questions about literacy in the context of science. We look forward to reading questions about students who puzzle you. We are in this together and together we can and we will ensure every child in Washington state is a skilled reader!
